A general imaging or shared-service ultrasound machine is capable of handling a broad range of investigations in all common applications such as abdominal, maternity, vascular, musculoskeletal, small parts, urology and even basic cardiac applications etc. On the other hand, ultrasound machines dedicated to specific specialties go deeper and possess features for advanced investigations in those specialties. E.g. GE Voluson series is for Women’s Health and GE Vivid is for Cardiac applications, while GE Logiq Series was for shared service or general imaging.

  1. Type & No. of Probes

An ultrasound machine may come with a range of compatible probes to deliver to its full range of capabilities. The no. and type of probes or transducers you need depends on the applications you are actually going to use it for. Transducer selection is one of the major factors contributing to Ultrasound machine price in India.

Types of probes

  1. Linear probes – are generally high frequency better for imaging superficial structures & vessels also called vascular probes. Linear transducers, for example, are used for things like vascular examinations, Breast, Thyroid, orthopedics, small parts and measuring body fat.

  2. Convex or Curvilinear probes – have widened footprint and lower frequency for transabdominal imaging & widen the field of view. Convex transducers are suitable for diagnosis of organs and abdominal examinations especially in urology, obstetrics & gynecology. Micro convex probes have much smaller footprint and typically used for neonatal and pediatric applications.
  3. Phase array probes – Phased Array Transducer has a small footprint and low frequency. Phased Array transducers are used for getting between ribs such as cardiac ultrasound, including Transesophageal examinations, abdominal examinations, Brain examinations etc.

  4. Endocavitary probes – E.g. Transesophageal (TEE), transvaginal & trans-rectal probes are have a small footprint and are inserted through the related body orifices to examine organs more closely.
  5. Other specialized probes – like hockey stick, pencil probes, Intra-operative probes like T or L probes.
  6. 3D & 4D volume probes – help in more detailed imaging in terms of volume data acquisition, volume display & analysis and multi-planar imaging of organs. In other words, assessing multiple 2-D image planes simultaneously. 3D imaging allows fetal structures and internal anatomy to be visualized as static 3D images. However, 4D ultrasound allows us to add live streaming video of the images, showing the motion of the fetal heart wall or valves, or blood flow in various vessels. It can be seen as 3D ultrasound in live motion. Sophisticated software is used to harness the 2D data collected and create 3D and 4D presentations.

Transducer / Probe Price

A specific type of probe may not cover the entire range of frequency required. E.g. 1-6 MHz convex probe may be used for abdominal & ObGyn application. But a higher frequency range of 3-10 MHz Convex probe would be required for pediatric & neonatal scans.

Each additional probe is going to add to the cost of acquisition for the machine. Cost of transducers varies from company to company (generally Philips probes are seen to be slightly costlier than GE probes – may be because of a slightly higher frequency range they cover). Generally each new Linear or Convex probe would cost ₹1-2 lakhs, Volume & TVS probes could cost in the range of ₹3-4 lakhs or more and TEE probes could cost upwards of ₹15 lakhs.   1. Portable, Console or Point-of-Care?

Once you have decided how you are going to use the ultrasound machine, the probes and the features you need, it is time to decide if a portable machine, as opposed to a stationary console, is the right choice.

In a multi-specialty hospital it needs to be clear if the machine is going to be moved around often between ICU, OT and OPD or even for camps. If so, you need a portable machine, as stationary console based sonography machine would be too cumbersome to move around and may get damaged. However, one must be aware that convenience of mobility comes at the cost of limited features, image quality, probe options and form-factor (smaller keyboard and display etc.)

While choosing a portable ultrasound, we have to be aware of the limitations and disadvantages. A portable ultrasound will:

  • Not have the same image quality and probe options as a console ultrasound,
  • Have limited software features and options as compared to a console ultrasound,
  • Have small keyboard and monitor like a laptop,
  • Could have similar footprint as a console ultrasound due to use of a cart to move it around.

Portable ultrasound machine are popular for their convenience, but price-wise they also range from economy to premium. In general portable ultrasound machines are less expensive than console-based ultrasound machines (Only about 20-25% lesser). GE Voluson i, GE Voluson e, GE Logiq e, Sonosite M-Turbo and GE Vivid i are some of the popular portable ultrasound machines. Even though you purchase a specialty focused machine and suitable probes, you may not be able to do all types of investigations unless it comes loaded with specified software. The software version also matters e.g. Logiq P5 BT 13 would be more updated as compared to BT11.

  1. Colour or Black & White

Black & White are basic models evidently with-out colour Doppler features. They are cheaper. A new Mindray DP-20 Black & White ultrasound machine costs around Rs 3-4 lakhs. Colour dopplers today have becomes basic requirement but if there is no cardio-vascular scan requirement a B&W 2D ultrasound machine would do just as well for basic abdominal, maternity and such other requirements.
