X-Ray machines are the oldest radiology equipment in use for diagnostic imaging since early twentieth century. Digital radiography is now gaining use instead of film or cassette based X-Ray and has its own advantages. Digital Radiography has not only improved image quality, but also eliminated cumbersome processes for image development. Technology advancements have also reduced the form factor of x-ray machines, so much so that handheld or portable x-ray machines are gaining popularity in the market for various applications. Let’s look at the pros & cons in use of handheld and portable X-ray machine.
Pros & Cons of handheld and portable x-ray imaging
Mobility and ease-of-use in lower mA applications are the major factors driving use of handheld x-ray machines.
Advantages of handheld X-Ray machines
- Portability providing convenience and better accessibility
- Portable or handheld X-rays can be used for the benefit of patients with mobility issues and/or physical challenges such as bedridden patients even for a chest X-Ray. It may be difficult to move or position such patients on X-ray table for proper scanning.
- Mobile or handheld X-Rays can be used for scanning in remote locations outside of hospitals or diagnostic facilities, such as screening camps etc.
- Lower mA applications
Portable or handheld X-Ray machines are usually of lower mA specifications or lower power capacity. These are adequate for
- scanning small parts such as limbs, hand & wrist etc.
- The lower current (20mA) is often suitable for smaller body parts like limbs, and for pediatric and veterinary imaging for small animals.
- Intra-oral (dental) x-rays also have lower power requirements, small form-factor and often handheld.
Key concerns with handheld x-ray machines
All types of radiology equipment including handheld x-ray machines in India, require an operating license from AERB. However, adequacy of image quality and radiation safety, especially for caregivers, remains a concern. Devices that are type approved from AERB meet adequate radiation safety standards. Also the low mA machines emit very low amount of radiation. Even so, due to higher proximity of the user in case of handheld machines and absence of additional protection such as lead shielding etc. due care and caution needs to be taken by the user. Lower power machines also could have limitations in terms of image quality producible, hence they are preferably used for small parts of screening purposes.
Sturdy, portable and compact
Most handheld/ portable X-ray machines are sturdy, compact and meant to perform well while being carried around frequently. Hence they come with a carrying handle as well accessories such as battery, etc.
GE’s Stallion 20mA X-Ray was a popular model in the past. Leading models of portable x-ray machines in the range of 30-50 mA are Allans – AXD-3085 FR-D, STARNUKE-PRT30 X, Eplsilon EP-CORSA 2.4P 35mA, Olympiks 50mA, Hindrays and many others.
